Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card Review (2026): A Status Card First, a Travel Card Second

Rates, fees and offers are current as of August 2026 and change without notice. Confirm terms with the issuer before you apply.

At $350 a year with no first-year discount, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card is priced as a mid-tier travel card but earns its keep as a status accelerator. MQD Headstart drops $2,500 in Medallion Qualification Dollars into your account each qualification year before you buy a ticket, half of what Silver Medallion costs, and MQD Boost adds $1 more for every $20 charged. The rest is competent rather than exciting: 3X on Delta and on hotels booked directly, $440 in annual credits, free checked bags, and a companion certificate confined to Delta's Main cabin. The status math only works above roughly $50,000 in annual card spend, and the credits only pay if you genuinely use Delta Stays, Resy and rideshares.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • $2,500 in MQD Headstart every qualification year, half the Silver Medallion threshold
  • MQD Boost earns $1 MQD per $20 of purchases, so status can come from spend rather than seats
  • $440 in annual credits: $200 Delta Stays, $120 Resy and $120 rideshare
  • 3X miles on hotels booked directly with the property, with no disclosed cap
Cons
  • The companion certificate arrives only on renewal and is limited to Delta's Main cabin
  • The 1.5X tier shares one $100,000 annual cap across transit, shipping and large purchases
  • No Delta Sky Club access at any spend level
  • The credits require enrollment or specific merchants, so none are automatic

How the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card Rewards Work

Earn 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases and on hotels booked directly, plus 1.5X on eligible transit, U.S. shipping, and any single purchase of $5,000 or more, all sharing a $100,000 combined cap per calendar year. Everything else earns 1 mile per dollar.

Read the middle tier closely. Eligible transit means train, taxi, ride share, ferry, toll, parking, bus and subway. Airfare, car rental and cruises are not eligible transit. The $5,000 single-purchase trigger will not fire if a merchant splits the charge into smaller pieces before reporting it.

Miles are Delta SkyMiles, spent on Delta and partner awards under dynamic pricing with no published chart. TakeOff 15 takes 15 percent off award travel on Delta flights booked through Delta's channels, though not on partner flights or taxes and fees.

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card Welcome Offer

The standing offer is 70,000 bonus miles after $6,000 or more in eligible purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership, measured from the account opening date. At $1,000 a month, most businesses with travel or supplier spend clear it without engineering anything.

What Amex actually writes is that you may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this card or previous versions of this card. It also weighs your balance transfer history, your record as a Card Member, and how many cards you have opened and closed. If you are ineligible, Amex says it will tell you before processing the application so you can withdraw it.

Status, Certificates and Credits on the Platinum Business Card

Medallion Qualification Dollars are the only currency Delta uses to award elite status now, after MQMs and MQSs were retired. For 2027 status, earned on calendar-2026 activity, Silver takes $5,000, Gold $10,000, Platinum $15,000 and Diamond $28,000, and the counter resets each January. Flights earn $1 MQD per $1 of ticket price, and Delta Main Basic fares earn none.

This card feeds that counter twice over. MQD Headstart deposits $2,500 each qualification year for the Basic Card Member, within six to eight weeks after February 1 or after account opening. MQD Boost then pays $1 MQD per $20 of purchases across the account. In practice, $50,000 of card spend and no flying at all reaches Silver, and $150,000 reaches Gold.

The companion certificate is the benefit most often overvalued. It arrives each year after renewal, not on approval, and covers one round-trip in Delta's Main cabin only, on domestic, Caribbean or Central American itineraries. Your companion still pays taxes and fees of $22 to $250 on itineraries of up to four segments, and Delta can void the certificate if the card is cancelled or downgraded within 60 days of the annual fee being billed.

For most holders the credits are worth more: $200 a year on eligible prepaid Delta Stays bookings, $120 at Resy restaurants, and $10 a month on U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers, with Resy and rideshare both requiring enrollment. First and second checked bags are free, the first covering up to nine passengers on your reservation and the second limited to U.S. itineraries. Zone 5 priority boarding is included, as is placement on the complimentary upgrade list for non-Medallion Card Members.

What the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card Costs

$350, flat, every year including the first. Nothing about the fee is introductory.

The credits do the covering. Use all three and you hold $440 against a $350 fee before miles, bags or status accrual count for anything, plus $120 toward Global Entry or up to $85 toward TSA PreCheck once every four years. Collect none and the fee is real money against a 3X earn rate.

This is not a card for carrying a balance. No introductory rate applies to purchases or balance transfers, and the ongoing purchase APR is 19.49% to 28.49% variable as of August 10, 2026, assigned at account opening. Penalty pricing is 29.99% variable, late and returned payments each reach $39, and no variable rate exceeds 29.99%. Spending overseas adds nothing, since there is no foreign transaction fee, which pairs sensibly with the 3X hotel rate abroad.

Who Should Get the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card

This fits an owner who flies Delta enough to care about the upgrade list and the boarding zone, but not enough to reach Silver on tickets alone. If you already push $50,000 or more a year through a business card, Headstart plus Boost converts that spend into status you were not otherwise going to earn.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if lounge access is what you are buying, because this tier includes no Sky Club entry regardless of spend. Skip it if you will not use Delta Stays or Resy, since roughly $320 of the $440 credit total sits behind those two behaviors. And skip it if the companion certificate is the draw and you fly premium cabins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I have to spend to reach Silver Medallion on this card alone?

$50,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year. The $2,500 Headstart covers half the $5,000 Silver threshold and MQD Boost at $1 per $20 supplies the rest. Gold at $10,000 would take $150,000 in purchases with no flight spend contributing.

Do the statement credits happen automatically?

Not all of them. The Resy and rideshare credits require enrollment before they pay anything, and rideshare is capped at $10 per month rather than pooled annually. The Delta Stays credit applies to eligible prepaid bookings on delta.com.

Do additional cards for employees earn MQDs?

Purchases on Additional Cards count toward MQD Boost, which is calculated on eligible purchases charged to the Basic Card or any Additional Cards. MQD Headstart goes to the Basic Card Member only; Additional Card Members are not eligible for it.

Bottom Line

Judge this card on the status math and nothing else. Above roughly $50,000 in annual card spend it turns ordinary purchasing into Medallion qualification that flights alone would not produce, and $440 in credits keeps the $350 fee from stinging. Below that level you are paying a premium fee for a 3X earn rate and a free bag.
