American Express Business Gold Card Review (2026): A Bonus Category You Do Not Choose

Rates, fees and offers are current as of August 2026 and change without notice. Confirm terms with the issuer before you apply.

The American Express Business Gold Card charges $375 a year and earns 4X Membership Rewards points in the two categories, out of six, where the account spent most that billing period. Amex picks the two, not the cardholder, and the rate covers $150,000 in combined purchases from them per calendar year. Against the fee sits a bundle Amex values at up to $845, built from four credits tied to named vendors: effortless if you already pay those vendors, worth nothing if you do not. One structural point: this is a charge-style card with no preset spending limit, so there is no purchase APR and no introductory 0% period.

How the Business Gold Rewards Work

Six categories qualify: US advertising bought to promote a business; US electronic goods retailers and software and cloud providers; US restaurants including takeout and delivery; gasoline at US gas stations, excluding superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs; transit merchants covering trains, taxis, rideshare, ferries, tolls, parking, buses and subways; and monthly wireless service billed directly by a US carrier.

Each billing period Amex finds the two where the account spent most and adds three points per dollar, for a total of four. The pairing shifts month to month. The rate runs to $150,000 in combined purchases per calendar year, then falls to a point per dollar. Flights and prepaid hotels booked with Amex Travel earn 3X, everything else 1X.

The Business Gold Welcome Offer

Amex advertises an offer as high as 200,000 Membership Rewards points after $15,000 in purchases within the first three months. That is a ceiling, not a fixed award, and the product page states welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible at all. After you submit the application and before approval, Amex tells you the exact number of points you are eligible to earn.

You may also be ruled out if you hold or have held this card or a previous version, and Amex weighs how many cards you have opened and closed. Plan the $15,000 of spending on the assumption that your offer lands below the headline.

The $845 Credit Bundle, Credit by Credit

The $240 Flexible Business Credit pays up to $20 per calendar month on eligible US purchases at FedEx, Grubhub and US office supply stores. Enrollment is required, only the basic Card Member or an Account Manager can enroll, and it is use-it-or-lose-it monthly. One date belongs in your decision: FedEx purchases qualify only through October 1, 2026, leaving Grubhub and office supply stores after that.

The $300 ChatGPT Business Credit covers up to $300 a calendar year on US subscription purchases, enrollment required and subject to auto-renewal. The $150 Squarespace Credit works identically. The $155 Walmart+ Credit reimburses up to $12.95 plus applicable taxes monthly when you pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership with the card, and Plus Ups are excluded.

A business already paying for ChatGPT Business and Squarespace collects $450 with almost no effort, more than the fee. A business using neither is left with a $20 monthly allowance.

Travel and Purchase Protections

The Hotel Collection gives a $100 credit toward eligible on-property charges, plus a room upgrade on arrival when available, on a two-night minimum stay booked through AmexTravel.com. Trip Delay Insurance reimburses up to $300 per trip when a covered reason delays a round trip by more than 12 hours, twice per card per 12 months. The Baggage Insurance Plan covers up to $1,250 for carry-on and $500 for checked bags beyond the carrier's coverage. Cell Phone Protection pays up to $800 per claim with a $50 deductible, twice per 12-month period, when the prior month's wireless bill went on the card. There is no lounge access.

What the Business Gold Costs

The fee is $375. Every Employee Business Gold Card is $95 a year, including the first, so there is no free tier. The no-fee alternative is the more limited Employee Business Expense Card, and the account holds up to 99 employee cards. Five staff on full cards adds $475, more than the fee itself.

There is no purchase APR and no introductory rate. Eligible charges go automatically onto a Pay Over Time balance up to your limit, and anything not added is due in full. Those balances carry 17.74% to 28.49% variable, accurate as of August 10, 2026. A late payment costs the greater of $39 or 2.99% of any past due pay-in-full amount. Foreign purchases carry no conversion fee.

Who Should Get the Business Gold Card

This earns its keep for a business concentrated in two of the six categories: an agency buying media and software, a field services company burning fuel and phone plans, a firm whose people live in taxis and restaurants. Add a ChatGPT Business or Squarespace subscription and the fee is covered before points enter the calculation. It also fits companies buying internationally, since foreign purchases carry no surcharge.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if your spending is spread thinly, because only two categories earn 4X in any billing period and the rest earn a single point per dollar. Skip it if you need to carry balances the way a revolving card allows. And if you are equipping a staff of ten, price the $95 per employee card first.

Frequently Asked Questions

**Do I pick which categories earn 4X?**

No. Amex selects the two with the most eligible purchases each billing period, from the fixed list of six. The pairing can change monthly and cannot be locked in. Older descriptions of a choose-your-own structure no longer apply.

**Is the FedEx part of the monthly credit going away?**

Yes. The terms state that purchases at FedEx are only eligible through October 1, 2026. After that the credit still runs at up to $20 a month, but the qualifying merchants are Grubhub and US office supply stores. Price the card without FedEx if that was the draw.

**What does No Preset Spending Limit actually mean?**

Amex does not publish a fixed ceiling on the account. Eligible charges are added automatically to a Pay Over Time balance up to your limit, and anything not added must be paid in full that month. Treat it as a card for spending you can clear.

Bottom Line

At $375, this is a vendor bet rather than a general-purpose business card. Pay for ChatGPT Business or Squarespace already, concentrate spending in two of the six categories, and it clears its own fee comfortably. Spread that spending evenly and buy from none of the four partners, and the renewal is hard to defend once every employee card adds $95 to the bill.
