What is a personal guarantee on a business loan?
A personal guarantee is your written promise to repay a business loan personally if the business can't. Sign one, and the lender can pursue your personal assets, savings, property, wages, after a default, even if the business is an LLC or corporation. It's not fine print to skim: it's the single clause that connects business debt to your personal life. It's also nearly universal in small business lending, so the practical question isn't "how do I avoid it?" but "do I understand exactly what I'm signing, and is this the best deal available?" Quordx Capital makes sure the answer to both is yes.

How Personal Guarantees Actually Work
When you sign a personal guarantee (often called a "PG"), the corporate veil that normally separates LLC debts from your personal finances doesn't apply to that loan. If the business defaults, the lender can seek repayment from you directly.
Where it's required: almost everywhere in small business lending. Banks require PGs. SBA loans require them from every owner of 20% or more of the business. Most online lenders require them. Equipment lenders typically do too.
Why lenders insist: a small business's fortunes and its owner's decisions are inseparable. The PG aligns your incentives with repayment and prevents owners from walking away from solvent obligations.
What varies: scope. Some guarantees are unlimited; others are capped or limited to your ownership percentage in multi-owner businesses. Some lenders pair the PG with a UCC lien on business assets. Reading these differences is exactly where comparing offers pays off.
Can you avoid one?: Occasionally: some invoice factoring arrangements lean on your customers' credit, and certain larger, well-collateralized deals negotiate limited guarantees. But for most borrowers, a no-PG demand simply shrinks the option list to its most expensive corner.
Products and What They Typically Require
Business term loans and working capital loans: PG standard. Best evaluated by comparing total repayment cost across offers.
SBA loans: PG mandatory for 20%+ owners; in exchange you get up to $5M at roughly 10.5%-14% variable today. Best low-cost option for qualifying businesses.
A/R financing / invoice factoring: sometimes lighter on guarantees since your clients' creditworthiness drives the deal. Best for B2B firms wanting to limit personal exposure.
Equipment financing: PG typical, but the collateral contains the realistic risk. Best when the asset largely secures itself.
