What is a DUNS number and do I need one?

A DUNS number is a free, nine-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet that creates your business credit file with D&B. Do you need one? If you want to build business credit, work with larger suppliers, or bid on certain contracts, yes: it costs nothing and takes minutes to request. But here's what most articles skip: you do not need a DUNS number to get business funding. Plenty of lenders approve based on revenue, bank statements, and personal credit. Waiting until your D&B file looks perfect just delays capital you could access now. Quordx Capital matches you with lenders who fund businesses at every credit-building stage.

How a DUNS Number Works and When It Matters

When you register for a DUNS number on the D&B website, Dun & Bradstreet opens a credit file on your business. Vendors and creditors who report to D&B feed payment data into that file, which builds your PAYDEX score: D&B's measure of whether you pay on time. Suppliers, landlords, insurers, and some lenders check this file before extending terms.

You need a DUNS number when: a supplier or partner asks for it, you want vendor accounts that report to D&B, or you're building a credit profile separate from your personal score. You don't need one to apply for most term loans, lines of credit, working capital products, or equipment financing: those decisions lean on bank statements, revenue, time in business, and personal credit.

Funding Options That Don't Require Established Business Credit

Working capital loans: ($5K-$500K): Best for covering operational needs while your credit file is still young; approvals lean on revenue, not your D&B report.

Equipment financing: ($5K-$5M+): Best for buying machinery or vehicles; the equipment itself is the collateral, which makes lenders flexible on credit history.

Business credit cards: Best for everyday spending that doubles as credit-building, since on-time payments get reported.

Business lines of credit: ($10K-$250K+): Best for flexible access to cash; you pay interest only on what you draw.

How Quordx Capital Works

Fill out one application, about five minutes, and upload your basic documents (bank statements, tax return, ID). Quordx Capital's matching process reviews your profile and matches you with 3-7 best-fit lenders from a network of 50+, ranked by your probability of approval. Most lenders respond within 24-48 hours, and funded deals typically close in 3-7 business days.

What to Expect

If your business credit file is thin or nonexistent, that's fine: many lenders in the Quordx Capital network care more about your revenue and bank activity than your PAYDEX score. Expect honest matching: if a product isn't right for you, Quordx Capital will say so rather than push a bad fit. The service is free to borrowers, no application fees, no broker fees, and checking your options carries no obligation.
