United Business Card Review (2026): Modest Perks Anchored by the Checked Bag

Rates, fees and offers are current as of August 2026 and change without notice. Confirm terms with the issuer before you apply.

At $150 a year, the United Business Card knows exactly what it is. Value concentrates in three narrow places: a free first checked bag for the primary cardmember and one companion worth up to $50 each way per person, two United Club one-time passes a year, and statement credits Chase markets as over $600 in annual partner value. Earning is generous on United purchases and ordinary everywhere else. Elite status is where it falls short, since card spend earns one Premier qualifying point per $20 with a 4,000 PQP annual ceiling, meaning $80,000 in purchases to reach the cap and no annual PQP bonus to shorten the trip. Judged as a fee offset for a business that flies United several times a year with a companion, it holds up.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • First checked bag free for the cardmember and one companion, up to $50 each way per person
  • Two United Club one-time passes each year, each described as over a $100 value
  • No foreign transaction fee, and employee cards add nothing to the annual cost
  • Seven statement credits, including $125 in TravelBank cash and up to $120 at Instacart
  • Award flights booked with miles now save 10% or more on United and United Express
Cons
  • PQP earn caps at 4,000 per calendar year, which takes $80,000 in purchases
  • The $100 rideshare credit needs a yearly opt-in and lapses if you forget
  • The 5,000-mile anniversary bonus pays only if you also hold a personal United card
  • MileagePlus prices awards dynamically with no published chart, so redemption cost varies
  • Current terms show a flat $150 fee with no first-year waiver language

How the United Business Card Rewards Work

| Category | Earn rate | |---|---| | Eligible United flights | 8x total miles | | Other United purchases: seat upgrades, Economy Plus, inflight food, beverage and WiFi, baggage and other fees | 2x | | Gas stations | 2x | | Dining, including eligible delivery services | 2x | | Office supply stores | 2x | | Local transit and commuting, including rideshare, taxis, trains and tolls | 2x | | United Card Events from Chase | 2x | | All other purchases | 1x |

That 8x is a stacked figure rather than a single card rate: six MileagePlus base miles on the primary cardmember's fare plus two card miles on the whole United purchase. Basic Economy and base-option tickets earn differently and Premier members earn more. United Cruises, MileagePlus X, DIRECTV and Merchandise Awards fall outside the 2x United category.

Miles land in MileagePlus, which prices awards dynamically with no published chart, so the cost of any given seat depends on the day. One recent addition helps: award flights on United and United Express booked with miles now save 10% or more. These are airline miles earned directly rather than a transferable currency, so their usefulness begins and ends with United and its partners.

The United Business Card Welcome Offer

Marketed as up to 110,000 bonus miles plus 2,000 PQP as of August 10, 2026, the offer arrives in two pieces. The first 100,000 miles and the 2,000 PQP follow $5,000 in purchases within three months. Another 10,000 miles follow from adding an employee card in that same window, paid once regardless of how many employee cards you add. Allow six to eight weeks.

The PQP portion behaves well. Those 2,000 points post directly to the MileagePlus account rather than the card statement, and they sit outside the 4,000 PQP cap on card spend, so they are genuinely additive. They apply toward Premier tiers up to and including Premier 1K, while the bonus miles themselves do not count toward status. The offer is closed to current cardmembers and to anyone who took a new cardmember bonus on this card in the past 24 months.

United Business Card Travel Perks and Statement Credits

The checked bag benefit does most of the work. It covers the primary cardmember and one companion on the same reservation, up to $50 each way per person, provided the ticket was bought with the card, on United and United Express operated flights. Bag fees are waived for flights taken within 90 days of account opening. Two people on one round trip is $200 in covered bag fees against a $150 fee, which is the plainest arithmetic on the card.

Two United Club one-time passes come each year, each admitting one person: you, an employee cardholder, or a guest travelling with you. Priority boarding applies to the cardmember and companions on the same reservation, after Premier members, Premier Access customers and passengers needing assistance. Spend $25,000 in a calendar year and two one-way Economy Plus upgrades follow, primary cardmember only, non-transferable, valid 12 months, continental US only. Inflight purchases and United Club premium drinks return 25%.

The credits are numerous and each carries a condition. A $125 travel credit posts as TravelBank cash each calendar year, but only after five separate United flight purchases of $100 or more, and that cash expires 12 months from issue. United Hotels returns up to $100, as $50 on each of your first two prepaid stays of $50 or more per anniversary year. Avis and Budget return up to $50 in TravelBank cash, $25 on each of the first two rentals, with a two-day minimum and booking through cars.united.com using United's codes. JSX is worth up to $100 and United FareLock up to $25, both automatic and both per anniversary year. Instacart returns $10 a month, up to $120, through 12/31/2027, and requires activating the complimentary Chase Instacart+ membership. The rideshare credit is $8 monthly from January through November plus $12 in December, up to $100, and it is the one requiring enrollment with a yearly opt-in.

Status earning deserves a flat statement. Card spend converts at one PQP per $20, authorized user spend included, capped at 4,000 PQP a calendar year, with no separate annual PQP bonus on this card. The cap is worth chasing only if you were spending $80,000 anyway. The 5,000-mile anniversary bonus is similarly conditional, paying only if you also hold a personal United card as primary cardmember.

What the United Business Card Costs

The fee is $150, stated flat in the current terms with no first-year waiver language. Employee cards cost nothing extra and there is no foreign transaction fee. Carrying a balance costs 19.74%–28.24% variable, based on a 6.75% Prime Rate as of 12/16/2025, with a 29.99% maximum, and no intro APR is offered. Cash advances run 28.49% with a fee of $15 or 5%, whichever is greater, and balance transfers cost $5 or 5%. Late and returned payments are $40 each, and a missed minimum payment can trigger a default APR of up to 29.99%. The grace period runs at least 20 days after each cycle closes.

Break-even is simple to describe. One round trip for two people, each checking a bag, covers the fee outright. Add the United Hotels credit or the Instacart credit and the card is ahead without effort.

Who Should Get the United Business Card

If United is your default carrier and you usually travel with a colleague, spouse or client on the same reservation, the bag benefit alone justifies the fee. It also suits an owner who wants two lounge visits a year without buying a membership and who would use the Instacart or rideshare credits regardless. Free employee cards make it a low-friction way to consolidate team travel spend.

Who Should Skip It

Skip it if you split flights across carriers, since nearly every benefit is United-specific and the non-travel earn tops out at 2x. Skip it if the goal is Premier status, because the PQP cap makes card spend a supporting player rather than a plan. And skip it if the credits do not match how you buy, since $150 paid against an unearned TravelBank credit and a lapsed rideshare enrollment is just $150.

Frequently Asked Questions

**Does the 5,000-mile anniversary bonus require a personal United card?**

Yes. It is a "better together" award and pays only if you hold a personal United credit card as the primary cardmember. There is no other anniversary award here, so a business-only cardholder should assume it does not apply.

**Can employees use the United Club passes?**

They can. Each of the two annual passes admits one person, and that person can be you, an employee cardholder, or a guest accompanying you. Allow about three weeks after an employee card is added before that employee redeems a pass alone.

**Will the rideshare credit renew by itself?**

No. It is the only credit here that requires enrollment with a yearly opt-in, so it stops paying if the opt-in is missed. The others post automatically or depend on a booking channel rather than an enrollment step.

**Does Chase's 5/24 rule apply here?**

Chase has never acknowledged 5/24 and does not publish it, but the consistent report is that five or more new card accounts across all issuers in the previous two years lead to a decline on any Chase card, this one included. Once open, the account should not push your own count higher, since Chase business cards are not reported to consumer credit bureaus.

Bottom Line

Priced at $150, this card earns its keep through one reliable benefit and a handful of small ones rather than through breadth. A business checking bags on United two or three times a year with a companion clears the fee without thinking about it, and the credits are upside on top. Anyone counting on card spend to reach a Premier tier should look elsewhere, because 4,000 PQP a year is not a status plan.
